BIOGRAPHY

Marilonah  Copra is a self-taught  funk/fusion bassist from the island of Curacao.

early life :

Marilonah was born on 9th June in the Netherlands. In 2006 she moved to Curacao. When she was 7 she sang in her aunt's gospel choir called ‘Arte Famia’, and played in a family band called ‘3MGN’.  In 2009 her grandmother bought a second bass guitar. From that day, she fell more in love with the instrument. At age 11 she played the upright bass in a youth orchestra called ‘Orkesta Foshk’, quitting 3 years later to play the french horn in her uncle's youth orchestra. But french horn was not quite her thing, so her cousin Gilan Minguel. suggested to start their own pop band. They named the band ‘UNLOCKED’.

Career:

3MGN:

Her grandmother’s dying wish was that all of her grand children could play an instrument. So her uncle Dennis Aalse created a family band called 3MGN. The 3 stands for the 3 Aalse brothers; Andrew Aalse (10) vocals/trumpet/guitarist, Jerermy Aalse (7) clarinet/sax/vocal and Kythan Aalse (3) drums/vocals. The M stands for Marilonah Copra (7) bassist/vocals, the G for her cousin Gilan Minguel (7) keys/vocals, and the N for her cousin Nachelle Oosterling (12) flute/vocals. They played music such as Jackson 5, Kool and the Gang, Los Lobolobos and more soul music from that era. In 2010 the band broke up due to school and other personal interests.

Orchestra:

Marilonah played the upright bass at 11 years old in a youth orchestra called ‘Foshk’. She was the youngest bassist in the orchestra. They played music like; the theme song from Harry Potter, Star Wars and the Godfather, however she quit when her uncle started his own orchestra and she decided that she wanted to play whole new instrument. So she picked up the french horn, which was a lot of fun and she performed a lot but soon realised that bass was her real calling.

UNLOCKED:

A few years later Marilonah and her cousin Gilan, decided to create their own pop band called ‘Unlocked’. The group became very popular, and even had 4 singles, making history on Curacao to be the first 14 year olds to be on the ‘bright top 40’ for 3 weeks straight. This came with a lot of interviews for television and magazines. But in 2015 Marilonah decided to quit the band and move to The Netherlands to improve her bass skills.
