Arp Frique & Family // SUPER-SONIC JAZZ - ONLINE FESTIVAL 2020 // Live from Paradiso Amsterdam
ARP FRIQUE: The Colorful World of Arp Frique is the exotic, super funky and well received debut album of Niels Nieuborg, released on Rush Hour. Pulsating NYC style live disco vibes, interwoven with both Caribbean and Cape Verdean sounds, are themes throughout the record with danceability always guaranteed and a healthy finishing touch of weirdness present across most tracks. First single ‘Nos Magia’ was shortlisted for Track of the Year 2017 at Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards and has been given airplay by BBC Radio 6 Music, BBC Radio 1 and NTS whilst club DJs Antal and Hunee have all supported the track in their sets. The Arp Frique alter ego is a reference of course to two things Nieuborg clearly appreciates in music: firstly the sound of the Arp synths and secondly, by referring to Chic’s ‘Le Freak’, he is also showing love to the genre of disco. Arp Frique’s music may sound vintage and authentic at times but all tunes are original and made with live instruments. Mind you though, that all compositions are the product of the “insatiable creative urge” of just one man. An annual festival and the launch of the independent record label Super-Sonic Jazz Records followed. With experimental programming that blends traditional jazz with contemporary genres such as hip-hop, neo-soul, R&B and electronic music, Super-Sonic Jazz pushes the boundaries of what jazz culture means to listeners, enthusiasts and artists alike. On October 21 and 22, 2020 the fourth edition of the annual Super-Sonic Jazz Festival would have taken place at Paradiso Amsterdam as part of the Amsterdam Dance Event, but given the situation surrounding the outbreak of the corona virus, the festival was presented as a digital livestream festival instead of a physical event. The online edition of Super-Sonic Jazz 2020 continues the mission of Super-Sonic Jazz, which is presenting and promoting local talents that we believe in. THE SEED - A Film By Arp Frique - full movie
The Seed Dedicated to Jesamy THIS MOVIE WAS CREATED TO LEAVE YOU WITH MORE QUESTIONS THAN ANSWERS The Seed is linked to a track by Stevie Wonder that Arp Frique often covers with his band live - 'A Seed's a Star/Tree Medley'. It is also the title of his latest album and the accompanying movie. This film is a deeply personal one. It reflects on the times we live in: the confusion, hope, despair, rebellion, unity, upgrading consciousness and divinity. The creative process - despite benefiting hugely from guests that include Americo Brito, Ronald Snijders, Mariseya and the late Orlando Julius - is also a personal and intense one. The theme of The Seed that runs through the movie, and the connotations of a life cycle, is linked to the birth of his daughter, the rise of his band, the creation of something out of nothing and many of life’s bigger questions. Much like the album itself, the accompanying movie touches upon the tones and styles of bygone decades. “It’s a mixture of a road movie featuring myself and the live band, mixed with a semi-fictional semi-autobiographical story with the album as a soundtrack. Think Holy Mountain meets Sun Ra movies meets Purple Rain but on a low budget with a VHS-cult vibe to it.” Credits Produced, written and directed by Arp Frique Camera by Joel Hempenius and the Arp Frique Family Intro animation by Andrew Beck aka Mystic Grandpa Starring Mariseya, Marilonah Copra, Erik “Keysie” Ritfeld, Emmanuel Afriyie, Djosa, Joel Hempenius, Ronald Snijders, Americo Brito, Orlando Julius, drs Fr. De Mari, Brian Holtzman, Jesamy, Arp Frique and others
